Oh, how annoying it can be to slather on the sunblock every half-hour on the dot when you are at the beach or pool, only to still be crispy red by the time that you return home. Luckily, the FDA is on top of this little problem and will soon be requiring sunblock manufacturers to have a higher level of protection in all of their products.
Just as a little tutorial, the UVA rays of the sun are responsible for aging, and the UVB rays are responsible for burning. An easy way to remember this is that A = aging and B = burning – very simple! Anyhow, we all know that the burning rays of the sun are no fun because they leave you peely and lobster red, but the silent UVA rays are much more dangerous because they will penetrate the surface of the skin and cause premature aging and damage on a larger scale. This can leave you with dark spots of hyperpigmentation and fine lines and wrinkles, which is why sunblock that protects from the UVA and UVB rays of the sun is such a necessity.
This new sunblock ingredient is called Tinosorb, which will absorb the UVA and the UVB rays of the sun. This is an ingredient that is already being used in South America and Europe, and it provides greater protection in a sunblock. These new rules are hopefully being set in place by the FDA so that all manufacturers of sunblock and sunscreen will provide greater coverage to the American public. Until that time, you can look for higher SPF that blocks from the UVA as well as the UVB rays in your sun care products. The UVA rays are an important part of the equation because if you are not protected, you will be left wrinkly and leathery, and no one wants that, do they?
