The Fine Art of Haggling

I visited a site where a woman was talking about her adventures in haggling.

Get your stuff cheaper by haggling

I’m a shy person when talking with someone I don’t know or talking over the phone, but for some reason I’m fascinated with people who can do this. Imagine being able to walk into a furniture store and asking for 30% off a sofa chair, or getting $200 off from a bedroom set. You never know unless you ask, right? Haggling happens a lot in other countries, according to sources I’ve read from. Why is haggling such a funny notion here?

People who regularly hunt down the best deals and use coupons may save a little more money simply by offering a rate they are more comfortable with. I think the idea is to help the business sell the product to you. If you walk out the door without buying anything, it’s not a good deal for the store owner. I think they’d rather offer a small discount than sell nothing at all.

When it comes to haggling, the secret seems to be knowing the price ahead of time, knowing what competitors are selling for, and knowing what 30% off is or what amount you may ask off before you walk into the store, or have a reasonable idea. This isn’t just for car sales, most store will haggle.

That is, of course, if you aren’t being a jerk about it. Play nice and you’ll probably get what you’re asking for.

I found a great online video about how to haggle:
